Denny Sofian is a filmmaker, photographer and writer based in Pontianak, West Borneo. He began his career in
environment conservation as an undergraduate student at Tanjungpura University in 1993. His visual and media
arts work started during his involvement in conservation work, sharing stories and images that he witnessed in
This interest evolved and in 2006, Deny was a finalists at a documentary competition in one of the national
television stations in Indonesia. In 2008, he joined the Exchange Project Program in Appalachian Media Institute
in USA, where his knowledge in media was sharpened
After working as a conservationist for 9 years, Deny started his own company, CANOPY INDONESIA in 2003, which led to the establishment of THE CANOPY FOUNDATION, a not-for-profit organization based in Pontianak,
West Borneo, INDONESIA, ten years later. The organization focuses in developing community capacity and
improving local economy; preserving and promoting local culture and indigenous knowledge; and preserving and
protecting environment and ecology sustainability.
Deny has been working with Danau Sentarum National Park and numerous village in West Borneo to design and
set up ecotourism on site and record and promote community culture through visual and media arts. He has
been traveling around Borneo for nearly 20 years, sharing stories that he encounters on the journey. His work
has been screened in film communities and festivals.
