 Dr. Cathy Henkel

Cathy Henkel has worked as a documentary producer/director and writer for the past 26 years.

She is founding director and CEO of Virgo Productions, and previously was co-founder and director of Hatchling Productions. Her work is focused on telling inspiring, positive, global stories with cross-platform delivery, engaging audiences world-wide through cinema, television, online, mobile and education platforms.

Cathy’s credits include The Burning Season (IF Award Best Documentary, EMMY nomination, 2008), I told you I was ill: Spike Milligan and The Man who Stole my Mother’s Face (IF Award and Tribeca Film Festival Award, Best Feature Documentary 2004). She also produced and directed Rise of the Eco-Warriors, an action adventure feature documentary set in Borneo and Show me the Magic, about acclaimed cinematographer Don McAlpine. Rise of the Eco-Warriors has been re-versioned as a 13 part TV series in conjunction with Singapore-based Silver Media Group.

In 2009, Cathy was awarded Documentary Producer of the Year by the Screen Producers Association of Australia for her work on The Burning Season.

She has won many other awards including an ACS Award for Show me the Magic, a Gold Panda Award at Sichuan Festival, China, Audience Choice Awards at London Australia Film Festival and Brisbane International Film Festival and numerous AFI and ATOM awards and nominations. 

Cathy is currently the Director of the WA Screen Academy at Edith Cowan University in Perth, Western Australia.

Cathy has a PhD from QUT and is researching innovative finance and distribution strategies for Australian screen content.

Cathy is the WA Chapter Head for the Australian Director's Guild (ADG) and a Board Member of the Australian International Documentary Conference (AIDC). She is also Co-Chair of the AIDC Advisory Committee. Cathy has established Game Changers, a forum for early and mid career filmmakers to discuss and shape the industry in the changing landscape of new technology, markets and platforms. The first Game Changers event will be held on August 25th 2016 at CinefestOz, WA.
