Dr Cathy Henkel honoured with Stanley Hawes Award
WA Screen Academy Director, Dr Cathy Henkel was honoured with a lifetime achievement Stanley Hawes Award. The accolade is presented annually at the Australian International Documentary Conference (AIDC) to a person who has made an outstanding contribution to the Australian documentary and factual sector.

Tasmanian screening of Laura’s Choice
Laura’s Choice is heading to Tasmania. The Cygnet Community Arts Council are presenting two screenings of the film – on Saturday 4th September at 7pm and Sunday 5th September at 2.30pm – at Cygnet Town Hall.Â

COVID permitting, one of the directors, Cathy Henkel, will be travelling to Tasmania for the screenings.Â
The feature version will be shown (104mins) and there will be a chance for audiences to meet Cathy after both screenings for a Q&A and informal conversations. Many thanks to Cygnet local and post sound genius Michael Gissing for making this happen.

The ABC broadcast of the 2 x 1 hour version of Laura’s Choice will take place on Wednesday 18th and Wednesday 25th March on ABC Plus and iView.

Laura’s Choice wins DocEdge 'Fearless' Award
Laura’s Choice was selected for the DocEdge International Film Festival in New Zealand, where it won the Best Fearless/Matatoa FestivalCategory.

Cathy and Sam attended the festival and were presented with the award at a glittering awards ceremony on Wed 2nd June at the Wintergarden, Civic in Auckland. They were also presented with the Pounamu or greenstone, highly valued in Maori culture, in a moving, private ceremony.

The film’s international premiere was held on Saturday 5th June at SkyCity Theatre, Auckland followed by a Q&A with renowned New Zealand filmmaker Leanne Pooley. The film also screens in Wellington on Saturday 19th June.

Ballina Fair Cinemas and Screenworks to host a special screening of Laura’s Choice
Ballina Fair Cinemas and Screenworks will host a special screening of Laura’s Choice on Sunday 7th February at 4pm for Laura’s friends, neighbours, doctors and carers and the filmmakers east coast friends and community. Composer Nicolette will fly up from Sydney for the event. The screening will be followed by a conversation with Cathy and Sam moderated by Catherine Marciniak.

Laura’s Choice wins the 2019 Brian Beaton award
Laura’s Choice has won the 2019 Brian Beaton award.  The award is presented annually to a filmmaker or filmmakers with social impact projects that need further support to reach their full potential. Each team will receive $8,000 in production, development and outreach campaign funding for their social impact projects.

Global Collaborative Learning with DeforestACTION
Last week DeforestACTION travelled to Fulford Secondary School in York, UK, to get reactions from students as they were introduced to the DeforestACTION project.

These students connected with Dr. Willie Smits via Skype, and began working together with other students around the world to learn about the issues of deforestion.
Â
Later in the week, they were invited to meet the Crown Princess of Jogyakarta, and pledged to expand their involvement in the project to help fund further orangutan rescues and to fight the destruction of important forests for palm oil production.

Sneak peak of new Show Me The Magic teaser screened at AACTA Awards
The magic life of cinematographer Don McAlpine just turned magical with Don being presented with Australia’s highest screen accolade – the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Raymond Longford Award.

The award was presented by film Director Bruce Beresford, actors Jack Thompson and Sigrid Thornton and Australian Film Institute Chairman Alan Finney, in recognition of Don’s 40 year career. Our new exciting teaser for Show Me The Magic was screened at the awards, giving audiences a sneak peak into the magic world of Don McAlpine.Â

Virgo Productions was invited to be part of the “Sense and Sustainability’ forum at this years Byron Bay Film Festival. Tara Wardrop (Associate Producer) and Georgia Hine (Marketing/PR Assistant) presented Project Borneo 3D  to the engaged audience and talked about the global impact this project.
